How to Use Benches and Ottomans in Your Home

Benches and ottomans are among the most versatile pieces in any interior — they add seating, storage, and style in equal measure. Here's how to use them well.

1. At the Dining Table

A bench along one side of a dining table is one of the most popular interior trends — and for good reason. It seats more people than individual chairs, creates a relaxed, informal feel, and looks beautiful. Pair a bench on one side with chairs on the other for a balanced, layered look.

  • Choose a bench that is slightly shorter than the table length
  • Ensure the seat height matches your dining chairs (45–48cm)
  • Upholstered benches add comfort; wooden benches are more durable and easier to clean

2. At the Foot of the Bed

A bench or ottoman at the foot of the bed is both practical and elegant — it's a place to sit while getting dressed, to lay out clothes, and to add a finishing layer to the bedroom.

  • Size it to roughly two-thirds the width of the bed
  • Upholstered styles add warmth and softness; wooden styles feel more structured and contemporary
  • A storage ottoman doubles as a linen or blanket chest

3. In the Living Room

An ottoman in place of a coffee table is a relaxed, family-friendly choice — softer, safer for children, and more flexible. Add a tray on top to create a stable surface for drinks and books.

  • Choose a size proportional to your sofa — roughly two-thirds the sofa length
  • A large square ottoman works well in front of a corner sofa
  • Upholstered ottomans in performance fabric are the most practical for everyday use

4. In the Entrance Hall

A bench in an entrance hall is one of the most functional pieces you can add — a place to sit while putting on shoes, and a surface for bags and keys. Keep it narrow (no more than 40cm deep) so it doesn't obstruct the hallway.

5. As Extra Seating

Ottomans and benches are the easiest way to add flexible extra seating when entertaining. They tuck away neatly and can be moved around the room as needed.
