How to Choose the Right Dining Table

The dining table is the heart of the home — it's where meals are shared, conversations happen, and memories are made. Choosing the right one is worth getting right. Here's how.

1. Get the Size Right

Start with your space, not the table. Measure your dining room and allow at least 90cm between the table edge and the wall or any furniture — this gives enough room for chairs to be pulled out and for people to move around comfortably.

As a general guide:

  • 4-seater — suits a table of approximately 120–140cm in length
  • 6-seater — approximately 160–180cm
  • 8-seater — approximately 200–220cm
  • 10-seater — approximately 240–280cm

2. Choose the Right Shape

  • Rectangular — the most versatile and common; suits most dining rooms and seats the most people
  • Round — great for smaller spaces and encourages conversation; no head of the table
  • Oval — the best of both; generous seating like a rectangle with the softer feel of a round

3. Choose Your Material

  • Solid wood — warm, durable, and timeless; develops character with age; requires occasional oiling
  • Oak — one of the most popular choices; hard-wearing and beautiful grain
  • Acacia — rich tones and natural variation; excellent value for money
  • Marble or stone top — luxurious and striking; heavier and requires more care
  • Engineered wood — more affordable and stable in humid conditions

4. Consider Your Seating Style

The table and chairs should work together in scale and style. Allow approximately 60cm of table width per person for comfortable elbow room. If you're mixing chair styles, keep a consistent finish or material to hold the look together.

5. Think About Everyday Use

A dining table takes a lot of punishment — hot dishes, spills, and daily use. Choose a finish that suits your lifestyle. Oiled wood is easy to repair but needs maintenance; lacquered finishes are more durable but harder to touch up.
