How to Choose the Right Mirror for Your Home

A mirror is one of the most versatile pieces in any interior — it adds light, creates the illusion of space, and anchors a room with style. But with so many shapes, sizes, and frame styles available, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. Here's what to consider.

1. Choose the Right Size

Scale matters. A mirror that's too small on a large wall will look lost, while an oversized mirror in a compact space can feel imposing. As a general rule, a wall mirror should fill roughly two-thirds of the wall space above a console or fireplace. For round mirrors, 700mm–900mm diameter works well in most living and dining rooms, while 500mm–600mm suits bathrooms and hallways.

2. Match the Frame to Your Interior Style

  • Natural oak or jute — warm, organic, and perfect for Scandi, coastal, or earthy interiors
  • Black powder-coated steel — clean and contemporary, suits modern and industrial spaces
  • Antique gold or distressed finishes — adds character and works beautifully in eclectic or classic interiors
  • Bamboo Chippendale — ornate and statement-making, ideal for maximalist or transitional spaces
  • Aluminium — lightweight, rust-resistant, and versatile for both indoor and outdoor-adjacent spaces

3. Consider Placement and Function

  • Entryways — a floor mirror or tall wall mirror creates a welcoming first impression and is practical for last-minute outfit checks
  • Living rooms — a large round or statement mirror above a console or fireplace adds depth and draws the eye
  • Bedrooms — a full-length floor mirror is both functional and decorative; lean it against the wall for a relaxed look or mount it for a cleaner finish
  • Bathrooms — opt for rust-resistant frames like aluminium; size it to your vanity width for a balanced look

4. Think About Light

Mirrors amplify natural light — position one opposite or adjacent to a window to maximise brightness in darker rooms. In south-facing rooms with limited light, a large mirror can make a significant difference.

5. Portrait vs Landscape

Most mirrors can hang both ways — portrait orientation elongates a wall and suits narrow spaces, while landscape works well above furniture like a sideboard or bed. Always check the hanging hardware before deciding.
