How to Style Your Home with Décor

Décor is the finishing layer of any interior — the details that make a space feel personal, considered, and complete. Here's how to style with confidence.

1. Edit, Don't Accumulate

The most common decorating mistake is having too much. A few well-chosen pieces will always look better than a crowded shelf. Start with less and add gradually — you can always layer in more over time.

2. Style in Odd Numbers

Groups of three or five objects are more visually interesting than pairs or even numbers. Vary the height, scale, and texture within each grouping for a natural, collected look.

3. Use the Triangle Rule

When arranging objects on a shelf or console, create visual triangles — place the tallest item to one side, a medium piece in the middle, and a low item on the other side. This creates movement and balance without symmetry.

4. Mix Textures and Materials

Combine hard and soft, matte and shiny, natural and refined. For example:

  • A ceramic vase + a woven tray + a sculptural object in stone or wood
  • A glass candle holder + a linen cushion + a terracotta pot

5. Anchor with a Hero Piece

Every vignette needs a focal point — a large vase, a piece of art, or a sculptural object that draws the eye first. Build the rest of the arrangement around it.

6. Bring in Nature

Plants, dried botanicals, and natural materials (wood, stone, jute) instantly add life and warmth to a space. Even a single stem in a simple vase can transform a corner.

7. Consider the Room's Colour Palette

Décor doesn't need to match exactly, but it should sit within the room's colour story. Pull one or two accent colours from your soft furnishings and echo them in your decorative objects.
