How to Choose the Right Chairs and Stools for Your Home

Chairs and stools are some of the most versatile pieces in any interior — they add seating, style, and personality. Here's how to choose the right ones for each space.

1. Dining Chairs

  • Match the table height — standard dining tables are 75cm tall; ensure your chair seat height is 45–48cm for comfortable clearance
  • Allow enough width — aim for at least 45–50cm per chair along the table length for comfortable elbow room
  • Mix and match — a bench on one side with chairs on the other is a popular and practical combination; or mix chair styles within a consistent colour or material palette

2. Occasional Chairs

  • Scale to the room — an occasional chair should feel like an accent, not compete with the sofa for dominance
  • Consider the use — a reading chair needs to be comfortable for extended sitting; a purely decorative accent chair can prioritise style
  • Placement — a pair of occasional chairs opposite a sofa defines a conversation area; a single chair in a corner with a floor lamp creates a cosy reading nook

3. Counter Stools & Barstools

  • Get the height right — this is critical:Counter height (90cm surface) — needs a stool with a 60–65cm seat heightBar height (105–110cm surface) — needs a stool with a 73–78cm seat height
  • With or without backs — backless stools tuck away neatly and suit casual kitchen islands; backed stools are more comfortable for longer sitting
  • With or without arms — armless stools are easier to tuck under a counter; arms add comfort but take up more space

4. Material and Style

  • Upholstered seats — comfortable and warm; choose performance fabric for kitchen and dining use
  • Wooden seats — durable and easy to clean; add a cushion for comfort at the dining table
  • Metal frames — industrial and contemporary; lightweight and easy to move
  • Rattan or woven — relaxed and natural; beautiful in coastal or earthy interiors
