How to Choose the Right Rug for Your Home

A rug is one of the most impactful purchases you can make for a room — it anchors furniture, adds warmth underfoot, and ties a colour palette together. Here's what to consider before you buy.

1. Get the Size Right

This is the most common mistake. A rug that's too small makes a room feel disjointed. As a general rule:

  • Living room — all front legs of your sofa and chairs should sit on the rug, or all furniture should fit on it entirely
  • Dining room — the rug should extend at least 60cm beyond the table on all sides so chairs remain on the rug when pulled out
  • Bedroom — a rug should extend at least 50–60cm beyond the sides and foot of the bed
  • Hallway — a runner should leave 15–20cm of floor visible on each side

2. Choose the Right Material

  • Jute & hemp — natural, textured, and earthy; best in low-traffic areas as they can be rough underfoot
  • Sisal — durable and tightly woven; great for hallways and high-traffic areas
  • Coir — coarse and hardwearing; ideal for entryways and outdoor-adjacent spaces
  • Seagrass — smooth, water-resistant, and naturally stain-resistant
  • Cotton — soft, washable, and versatile; great for bedrooms and kids' rooms
  • Easy-clean / outdoor weave — UV-resistant and moisture-tolerant; perfect for patios, pool areas, and high-traffic indoor spaces

3. Round vs Rectangle

  • Round rugs work beautifully under round dining tables, in reading nooks, and in entryways — they soften angular spaces
  • Rectangular rugs are the most versatile and suit most living and dining room layouts

4. Consider Colour and Pattern

  • Neutral tones (natural, beige, grey) are timeless and work with almost any palette
  • Bold patterns make a statement and can anchor a neutral room
  • Textured naturals add depth without competing with other elements in the space

5. Indoor vs Outdoor

Always check whether a rug is rated for outdoor use. Indoor rugs used outside will deteriorate quickly from UV exposure and moisture. Our easy-clean outdoor range is specifically designed for South African conditions — UV-stable, moisture-resistant, and easy to hose down.
