Rug Size Guide: How to Choose the Right Size Rug for Every Room

Liza Petrie

Choosing the right rug size is one of the most important — and most frequently misjudged — decisions in interior design. A rug that's too small makes a room feel disconnected; one that's too large can overwhelm the space. This guide takes the guesswork out of rug sizing, room by room.

The Golden Rule of Rug Sizing

When in doubt, go bigger. Most people underestimate the size they need when standing in a rug shop. Laying a rug down in the actual space almost always reveals that a larger size would look better.

Living Room Rug Sizes

  • All legs on the rug: Every piece of furniture sits fully on the rug. A 240 × 340cm rug or larger is typically needed.
  • Front legs on the rug: The most popular approach. A 200 × 290cm to 240 × 340cm rug works well for most lounge configurations.
  • Rug as an accent: Under the coffee table only. Aim for 120 × 180cm to 160 × 230cm.

Bedroom Rug Sizes

  • King bed: 240 × 340cm, extending approximately 60cm beyond each side and the foot of the bed.
  • Queen bed: 200 × 290cm with the same 60cm extension rule.
  • Single bed: 160 × 230cm is a good starting point.
  • Runners: Two 60 × 180cm runners on either side of the bed is an elegant alternative.

Dining Room Rug Sizes

Add at least 60cm to each side of your table dimensions so chairs remain on the rug when pulled out.

  • 4-seater table: 200 × 290cm minimum.
  • 6-seater table: 240 × 340cm.
  • 8-seater table: 270 × 360cm or larger.

Round Rugs

  • Under a round dining table: rug diameter = table diameter + at least 120cm.
  • As a living room accent: 150–200cm diameter anchors a coffee table or reading chair.
  • In an entryway: 90–120cm diameter adds a welcoming focal point.

Hallway & Entryway Rug Sizes

  • Runner width: half to two-thirds the hallway width, with equal bare floor on each side.
  • Leave 15–30cm of bare floor at each end.
  • Standard widths: 60–90cm; standard lengths: 150–400cm.

How to Test Rug Size Before You Buy

Use masking tape or newspaper on the floor to mock up the rug dimensions. Walk around, sit in your furniture, and check how the boundary feels. This simple step prevents the most common sizing mistakes.
