Rug Care & Cleaning: How to Keep Your Rug Looking Beautiful

Liza Petrie

A quality rug is an investment — and with the right care, it will reward you with years of beauty and warmth. Whether you have a natural weave jute rug, a seagrass flatweave, or an indoor-outdoor rug, the principles of good rug care are straightforward. Here's everything you need to know.

Everyday Maintenance

Vacuuming

  • Vacuum natural weave rugs at least once a week, more often in high-traffic areas.
  • Use a low-suction setting or a vacuum without a beater bar.
  • For flatweave rugs, vacuum both sides periodically.
  • Avoid vacuuming fringe with the main head — use the nozzle attachment instead.

Rotation

Rotate your rug 180° every 6–12 months for even wear and to prevent uneven fading from sunlight.

Dealing With Spills

  1. Blot, don't rub. Use a clean white cloth to blot up as much liquid as possible.
  2. Work from the outside in to prevent spreading.
  3. Use cold water — hot water can set stains.
  4. Allow to dry fully. Never allow a wet natural rug to sit on a hard floor; it can cause discolouration and mildew.

Care by Fibre Type

Jute & Hemp Rugs

Avoid wet cleaning wherever possible. For most marks, allow to dry fully then brush off with a stiff dry brush. Do not steam clean or saturate with water.

Sisal Rugs

Dry cleaning or professional cleaning is recommended for deep stains. Vacuum regularly and treat spills with a barely-damp cloth.

Seagrass Rugs

The most moisture-resistant natural fibre. Wipe with a slightly damp cloth for most marks. Allow to dry fully after any cleaning.

Outdoor Rugs

  • Hose down periodically and allow to dry completely before returning to position.
  • Shake or beat to remove dust and debris.
  • Store flat or rolled (not folded) during extended periods of non-use.

Using a Rug Underlay

  • Prevents slipping on hard floors — essential for safety.
  • Protects the rug from abrasion, extending its lifespan.
  • Adds cushioning underfoot, especially important for flatweave natural rugs.
  • Improves airflow, reducing moisture build-up.

Long-Term Storage

  • Clean and dry thoroughly before storing.
  • Roll (don't fold) with the pile side inward.
  • Wrap in breathable fabric or brown paper — avoid plastic.
  • Store flat in a cool, dry space away from direct sunlight.

When to Call a Professional

For stubborn stains or rugs that haven't been deep-cleaned in years, professional cleaning is worthwhile. Always choose a cleaner experienced with natural fibre rugs.
