How to Choose the Right Outdoor Furniture

Outdoor furniture takes more punishment than anything inside your home — sun, rain, wind, and humidity all take their toll. Here's how to choose pieces that look great and last.

1. Choose Weather-Resistant Materials

South African conditions — particularly coastal areas like the KZN North Coast — demand materials that can handle UV exposure, humidity, and salt air:

  • Aluminium — lightweight, rust-proof, and virtually maintenance-free; the best all-round outdoor material
  • Teak — naturally oily and incredibly durable; weathers to a beautiful silver-grey if left untreated, or maintain the warm honey tone with teak oil
  • Synthetic rattan / PE wicker — UV-stable and weather-resistant; looks great and requires minimal upkeep
  • Powder-coated steel — durable and stylish but requires occasional touch-ups if the coating chips in coastal environments
  • Concrete or stone — extremely durable; heavy and permanent; best for fixed settings

2. Consider Your Space

  • Small balcony or courtyard — a bistro set (table + 2 chairs) or a compact loveseat with a side table maximises the space
  • Medium patio — a 4–6 seater dining set or a sofa set with a coffee table works well
  • Large entertaining area — consider zoning: a dining area, a lounge area, and possibly a daybed or lounger zone

3. Comfort Matters Outdoors Too

Outdoor cushions should be filled with quick-dry foam and covered in UV-resistant, water-repellent fabric. Look for cushions that can be left outside in light rain and dry quickly — this makes a significant difference to everyday usability.

4. Think About Shade

Even the best outdoor furniture will fade faster without shade. Position your furniture under a pergola, umbrella, or shade sail where possible — this extends the life of cushions and frames significantly.

5. Storage and Maintenance

  • Store cushions inside during extended periods of rain or when not in use
  • Rinse aluminium and synthetic rattan frames with fresh water periodically, especially in coastal areas
  • Oil teak annually to maintain its colour; or leave it to weather naturally
