How to Choose the Right Sofa or Couch

Your sofa is the most used piece of furniture in your home — and likely the most expensive. Getting it right is worth the time. Here's what to consider.

1. Measure First, Always

Before falling in love with a sofa, measure your space. Key things to check:

  • Will it fit through your front door, hallway, and into the room? (Check width and diagonal dimensions)
  • Allow at least 45cm between the sofa and coffee table
  • Leave at least 90cm for main walkways around the sofa

2. Choose the Right Size

  • 2-seater — suits smaller living rooms or as a secondary sofa
  • 3-seater — the most versatile; works in most living rooms
  • L-shape / corner sofa — ideal for large open-plan spaces; defines the living zone and maximises seating

3. Choose Your Fabric Wisely

  • Performance fabric — stain-resistant and durable; ideal for families with kids or pets
  • Linen — beautiful and breathable; best in low-traffic rooms or adult households
  • Velvet — luxurious and rich; more delicate but stunning in the right space
  • Boucle — on-trend, textural, and surprisingly durable
  • Leather — timeless, easy to clean, and improves with age

4. Consider the Frame and Legs

A quality sofa starts with a solid frame — look for kiln-dried hardwood or engineered wood frames. Leg style and height affects the overall look significantly; higher legs feel lighter and more contemporary, while low-profile frames feel more relaxed and modern.

5. Think About Comfort, Not Just Style

Sit in it (or check the seat depth carefully online). Deep seats are great for lounging but can be uncomfortable for shorter people. Firm cushions hold their shape better over time; soft down-filled cushions feel luxurious but require more maintenance.

6. Colour and Longevity

Neutral tones (linen, grey, cream, camel) are the safest long-term investment — they work with changing décor and don't date. If you want colour, introduce it through cushions and throws which are easy to swap out.
