How to Choose the Right Lighting for Your Home

Lighting is one of the most transformative elements in interior design — it sets the mood, defines zones, and can make a space feel larger, warmer, or more dramatic. Here's how to choose the right lighting for every room.

1. Layer Your Lighting

Great interiors use three layers of light working together:

  • Ambient lighting — the main source of light in a room (ceiling pendants, chandeliers, downlights)
  • Task lighting — focused light for specific activities (desk lamps, reading lamps, kitchen pendants)
  • Accent lighting — decorative or mood lighting (wall lights, table lamps, floor lamps)

2. Choose the Right Fitting for Each Room

  • Living rooms — a statement chandelier or oversized pendant as a focal point, layered with floor lamps and table lamps for warmth
  • Dining rooms — a pendant hung 70–80cm above the table creates intimacy; size it to roughly two-thirds the width of your table
  • Bedrooms — bedside table lamps or wall-mounted reading lights keep the space soft and functional
  • Home offices — a quality desk lamp with adjustable brightness reduces eye strain and improves focus
  • Bathrooms — wall lights flanking a mirror provide even, shadow-free light for grooming

3. Match the Style to Your Interior

  • Woven pendants — warm, organic, and perfect for coastal, Scandi, or earthy interiors
  • Metal pendants — industrial, modern, or minimalist spaces; available in black, brass, and chrome
  • Glass pendants — elegant and light-reflecting, ideal for dining rooms and entryways
  • Rattan or bamboo shades — relaxed and natural, great for open-plan living areas

4. Get the Scale Right

Oversized pendants make a bold statement in high-ceilinged rooms, while smaller fittings work better in compact spaces. For chandeliers, add the room's length and width in metres — the result in centimetres is a good guide for the diameter.

5. Consider Bulb Temperature

  • Warm white (2700–3000K) — cosy and inviting; ideal for living rooms and bedrooms
  • Cool white (4000K) — crisp and energising; suits home offices and kitchens
  • Daylight (5000–6500K) — bright and clinical; best for task-heavy spaces
