How to Choose the Right Furniture for Your Home
Furniture is the backbone of any interior — it defines how a space functions, flows, and feels. Whether you're furnishing a new home or refreshing a room, here's how to make confident, lasting choices.
1. Start with a Floor Plan
Before buying anything, measure your space and sketch a rough floor plan. Key clearances to keep in mind:
- Living room — at least 45cm between a coffee table and sofa; 90cm+ for main walkways
- Dining room — at least 90cm between the table edge and the wall so chairs can be pulled out comfortably
- Bedroom — at least 60cm on either side of the bed for easy movement
2. Decide Between Ready-to-Ship and Custom
- Ready-to-ship furniture is ideal when you need pieces quickly or want to see exactly what you're getting
- Custom furniture gives you full control over dimensions, materials, and finishes — perfect for awkward spaces or when you have a specific vision in mind
- At Greenhaus, we offer both — with custom pieces made locally in Ballito for KZN clients
3. Choose Materials That Suit Your Lifestyle
- Solid wood — durable, timeless, and improves with age; requires occasional oiling or waxing
- Engineered wood — more affordable and stable in humid conditions
- Upholstered pieces — consider fabric durability (especially with kids or pets); performance fabrics are worth the investment
- Outdoor furniture — look for UV-resistant, rust-proof, or teak/aluminium frames that can handle South African weather
4. Think About Longevity Over Trends
Invest in quality for the pieces you use most — your sofa, dining table, and bed. These are the workhorses of your home and should last 10+ years. Accent pieces like side tables and occasional chairs are where you can afford to follow trends.
5. Cohesion Over Matching
A well-designed room doesn't need to be perfectly matched — it needs to be cohesive. Mix materials and finishes within a consistent colour palette and style direction for a collected, lived-in look.
